SFE Customer Services

Contact SFE on the number to the left to speak to Student Finance England customer services. If you are new to student finance, you should ask for some guidance before starting to apply. Find out if your circumstances and the course you are doing entitle you to student loan funding. You should enquire about conditions for part-time, EU, or international students wanting to study in England if this applies to you. Find out about bursaries and training funding which doesn’t need to be paid back. Discuss Childcare Grants and Parents’ Learning Allowance if you study full-time and have children. You can also find out about help for students with adult dependants, or the Disabled Student Allowance for students with health or learning problems.

Undergraduate Student Funding

While it is the responsibility of postgraduates to pay their tuition fees to their university, SFE will handle payments directly to the institution on behalf of undergraduates. Undergraduates will then receive their maintenance loan separately in their own bank account to help with living and studying costs. Call the number to the left if you are an undergraduate student in need of help with funding to attend your chosen course. Check how much you are eligible for and if you can get any extra financial support. Find out what you need to report through the year to keep SFE up to date. This includes changes in income or leaving your course.

Postgraduate Student Funding

Student finance is slightly different for postgraduate study. You could get a Master’s Loan up to £10,609 for a master’s degree or a Doctoral Loan of up to £25,000 for a doctoral degree. These are to assist with tuition fees and living costs while you are studying. Call the number to the left to get assistance with either of these government loans. You can also call to discuss other possibilities for postgraduate funding.  This includes studentships, bursaries for social, medical, or healthcare courses, charity or trust grants, and research funding from learned societies. Or call to discuss Professional and Career Development Loans.

Student Finance Applications

To apply for a student loan, you must set up a Student Finance account. This will require completing the application form with the details of your course and personal finances. You will need to reapply each year of your course if you are a continuing student. Call SFE on the number to the left for assistance with applying for a loan. You should call them if you are unable to apply online or need help to fill in the forms. Call to check the deadline for student finance applications in order to secure your loan before the start of the academic year. You will need to provide proof of your identity, like your passport number, to confirm your eligibility.

Student Finance Payments

Students will not receive their loan payments until after registration at their university at the start of the academic year. The institution must confirm your registration with Student Finance England before they will send the money. Loans are usually split into three instalments to align with the start and end dates of the terms. Call the number to the left to check your expected payment dates for the year. You should call if you applied successfully and registered by the deadline but have not received your first payment. The status may be awaiting confirmation, scheduled, in progress, blocked, or failed, but they can tell you what to do.

Student Loan Repayments

Students will need to repay their tuition fee loans and maintenance loans. When you start repaying and how much you pay at a time depends on your loan plan. How you make repayments depends on whether you are in employment or self-employed. Call the number to the left to check if you are on Plan 1 or Plan 2. You should start repaying the April after your course finishes if your income meets the threshold for beginning repayments. Most people will have repayments taken out of their salary and shown on their payslips. You can contact SFE if there is a problem with your repayments or if you’ve decided to pay off your loan early.
